The White Rose Good Neighbor program has the honor of sponsoring the effort to support the academic achievements of thousands of NYC students over the past 20 years. The program began as an idea to promote the rewards of achieving academic excellence as well as leadership skills. The program also proposed to reduce the drop out rate of the students in our community. By supporting the mentoring programs, the schools’ staff, the Good Neighbor program and our partner Save Latin America have been able to bring about the yearly “Reaching our Dreams” program, an effort that has gained much recognition in New York City.

Good Neighbor collaborated with renowned basketball coach, Bob Hurley, to create a free inner city basketball camp that not only focuses on the game of basketball, but also the game of life. That camp, now in its fourth year, is the St. Anthony Basketball camp, co-coached by Ben Gamble. Through one-on-one interaction, the camps focus on leadership, team building, family values and the importance of education. Recreational activities are inherently exciting and fun ways for young people to learn many life skills. The camp supervisors are well aware that participation in sports helps keep young people motivated and focused on schoolwork.

The Good Neighbor program and Kraft will donate food and meals during this campaign to create awareness for the food needs of our community. The trigger for a substantial portion of the Huddle to Fight Hunger donations is for Americans to “like” the Kraft Fight Hunger page on Facebook. Once you “like” this new Facebook page you will be prompted to enter your zip code, which will generate a one meal donation to your local Feeding America food bank. Another trigger for this promotion is consumer purchases of Kraft products at Met and Pioneer Supermarkets.
There are 3.3 million New Yorkers who experience difficulty affording food–an astounding number and one that continues to increase. Food prices are at an all-time high and food supply from donations has dropped in recent years. So the role of the Food Bank and Kraft is to address this pressing need. The Food Bank procures and distributes food to a network of some 1000 community-based programs citywide. In doing so, the Food Bank provides much needed free meals to over 400,000 people every day.
